Court house, Breda

Outdoor terrain and rooftop park

In September 2018 King Willem Alexander opened the new court house for the provinces of Zeeland and West-Brabant in Breda. The modern building marks the railway zone. The roof of the parking garage offers space to a public park of 6.000 m2.

On the square in the front of the court house, honey tree (Sophora japonica), Honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos inermis) and Golden rain tree( Koelreuteria paniculata) were planted. These beautiful trees filter the sunlight, provide shadow and cooling. Alongside the Stationslaan Silver Linden (Tilia tomentosa) have been planted.

Next to the railway, on the roof of the parking garage the first part of the Railway park has been realised. In the future, this elongated park will connect het train station with the surrounding areas outside the city centre.

The park is open for public and contributes to the city’s liveability. Rain water is buffered and because of diverse plantation it is an attractive place for insects, small mammals and birds. Grasses and flowering plants, like Sedum and Verbena alternate the grouped trees. Vertical tree elements in the park are birches (Betula pendula) and locust trees (Robinia pseudoacacia). The large pines (Pinus sylvestris) are solitary planted in the landscape. When sitting down on one of the many benches you can enjoy several different views of the court house, railway and church tower of Breda.

Company Van Kessel Sport en Techniek (sport and rural engineering) was responsible for the construction of the entrance square (design by Karres+Brands). Nursery Udenhout supplied the plantation, for instance large specimen trees and all perennials for the railway park. Most trees were planted in size 30-35, which gives the large building instantly character.
