Hart van Brabantlaan, Tilburg

Leafy avenue

The Hart van Brabantlaan actually is considered to be „the heart“ of Tilburg: a busy arterial road along the railway, towards the central station and downtown, flanked by big (high-rise)flats. In 2011 the renewal oft he arterial road started; at that point of time it was a bland, unremarkable road.

Tilburg is a green city and surrounded by woods. This wasn’t showing when one was approaching the city centre. During the development of the plans for the train station area developers concluded that public green spaces must have an important place and function. For the Hart van Brabantlaan this meant construction of a leafy avenue with a more urban character towards the city centre. On the wide central reservation small groups with amongst other (multistemmed) birches (Betula pendula), multistemmed pines (Pinus nigra nigra), multistemmed snowy mespilus (Amelanchier lamarckii) and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) are planted. It was decided to go with a landscape design and these specific varieties in order to bring the countryside feeling to the city centre.

On both sides of the avenue American sweetgum trees are planted with underneath an hedge of Russian olives (Eleagnus ebbingei). The Russian olives are evergreen and their silvery grey glow provide a special appearance. In autumn, the Sweetgum trees change into a flaming orange-red colour. In total 36.000 Russian olives and 84 American sweetgum trees were planted.
