For two years the NS-square has been under construction. It began in 2013, when the viaduct under the trail way was deepened. Afterwards the square became the starting point of De Blauwe Ader. A new sewage that carries away rainwater from the inner city and avoids floods like the one of summer 2014. The drilling took place at 7 metres depth and covers 170 metres under a busy intersection and the elevated track.
Uncertainty
The square has had many purposes throughout the years and residents were often surprised for the end result. Local media thought this was a good subject for (cynical) articles about the situation around the NS-square, for example the large amount of traffic signs that reroute cyclists around the square. Mid 2015 het uncertainty came to an end. Now, only a manhole cover is left to remind us of the 7 metres deep hole that was dug. Cyclists have a clear cycling path situated around the square and a small park has been realised.
Exceptional city garden
There was a lot of criticism on the original design plan for the NS-square. That is why in agreement with residents, a more ambitious plan arose with more plantation and sitting areas. In the south corner of the square a beautiful city garden has been realised. Along the outer side of the square a green border with trees, shrubs and perennials which Nursery Udenhout delivered, has been completed. The NS-Plein now is an enjoyable place in Tilburg to live in.
