Westzijde-area, Zaandam

Drip-free linden trees in steel planters

The Dutch city Zaandam has been redesigning and renovating the public space of the Westzijde-area. It was decided to move plantation aboveground, so that possible future problems (damaging of cables, sewer system and wiring) could be avoided.

Because the Tilia mongolica ‘Buda’ Nursery Udenhout delivered, had a coconut rootball, it was possible to plant the trees in summer and the project was not delayed. The Linden trees were planted into weathering steel planters, which were cleverly designed. Not only do they provide sufficient growing space for the trees, they also offer seating to the shopping public. It was decided to plant Buda Linden, because they do not suffer from mildew and thus do not drip. The tree planters combined with the new road bricks give the Westzijde-area character.
