The Pinus nigra nigra is a very tall, big tree, height 20-30 m. In its youth it is pyramidal, later round and screen-like. The needles are long and dark green (8-14 cm), in pairs. The dark grey (black) bark has deep grooves. Very decorative.

Does well on all soil types, even when they are dry and calcareous. Resistant to drought and air pollution and can handle (onshore) wind well. Can be planted as a specimen tree in parks.
