Yellow-orange, red
After a long trial period of over 30 years and a lot of research, the Crataegus succulenta ‘Jubilee’ turned out to be fire blight resistant. It stayed healthy even in afflicted areas. That is why PPO Nederland has selected this hawthorn.
Fire blight resistance is one of the most important characteristics that a hawthorn tree requires. This selection has more to offer, though. Compared to ‘Splendens’, ‘Jubilee’ has more flowers, and the lower branches do not sag. The white flowers appear in May/July. The fruits are round and red, and birds love them. The leaves are wide, oval-shaped and dark green, with teeth on the edges. In autumn, the leaves turn from yellow-orange to red. This hawthorn also has thorns, measuring about 4 cm.
It is a true tree among hawthorns. The leader is sturdy and continuous, with a full, wide-oval crown. It is a fast grower, resistant to heat and air pollution, though slightly susceptible to the breeze. With a final height of 6-8 m, it is a pretty tree suitable for various places. The lower branches of ‘Jubilee’ grow upright at an angle, which leads to a spherical, vase-shaped crown. Taking into account the long thorns of the tree, the ‘Jubilee’ is slightly more suitable for green areas along roads and pathways.
The Crataegus succulenta ‘Jubilee’ is an improvement of the hawthorn assortment: more flowers, more berries, a host plant for, among others, bees, butterflies, and birds, a fast grower, and fire blight resistant.
