The Quercus cerris 'Marvellous' is a ‘semi’-evergreen Turkey oak from the Fagaceae family. The tree is a Dutch selection and naturally occurs in Southwest Asia and in the south and middle of Europe. It is a beautiful park tree and a very good avenue and street tree for wide profiles. This ‘evergreen’ Turkey oak keeps its leaves until the first severe nightly frost, and sometimes even longer. The Quercus cerris ‘Marvellous’ is often planted for decoration and shade.
In its youth phase, the Quercus cerris ‘Marvellous’ is narrow, and grows wider later on. The Turkey oak has a beautiful shape thanks to its wide, conical crown with a continuous leader. The tree can grow up to 15 to 20 metres. They are light green when they sprout, and turn shiny dark green on the upper side and greyish green on the bottom side later on. The leaves strongly vary in size and shape; they are 6-12 cm long, sometimes highly lobed to sharply serrated. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow/brown. The twigs stay green for a long time and are wind resistant.
The Quercus cerris 'Marvellous' is a healthy tree, free from disease and pests. This distinctive tree is winter hardy and never suffers from mildew. The Turkey oak does not ask for much when it comes to soil; a nutritious, dry to humid ‘average’ soil is preferable. That means soil that is not too heavy or light, with neutral acidity. The tree likes a spot in the sun or light shade, and can even stand closed pavements.
